Getting to Graz

You can reach Graz via train, plane or by car.

  • Getting to Graz by plane

Graz is served by the Thalerhof International Airport (GRZ), which offers direct flights to many European cities.

You can reach the town center from the airport by public transportation or by taxi. For detailed information and to access a route planer, please refer to website of Styria's Public Transportation System (Verbundlinie).

Please note: Though Graz has an international airport, not all cities are directly connected. Connecting flights are often routed through Vienna. For those on limited budgets, it may be more cost-effective to fly to Vienna International Airport (VIE) and then arrive in Graz via intercity bus or train. Trains between Vienna and Graz typically run hourly during daytime hours on weekdays. Intercity buses, like FlixBus, also run regularly during those times.

  • Getting to Graz by train

Graz is connected to major cities all over Europe via an extensive rail network. Trains arriving from the closest neighboring countries often run directly between those countries' major cities and Graz. For information about the train schedules and costs, please refer to the official website of the Austrian Railways (ÖBB).

Please note that Austrian Railways offer non-refundable tickets at reduced rates. If booked early enough, these could involve substantial fare savings in fares.

Trains arriving to Graz stop at the Main Railway Station (Hauptbahnhof). The main railway station is connected to the University of Graz by two separate bus lines (Buses 58 and 63) and to the city center by several bus and tram lines. As noted above, for detailed information and to access a route planer, please refer to website of Styria's Public Transportation System (Verbundlinie).

  • Getting to Graz by car

Graz can be reached via two major freeways: the A-9 (North-South) and the A-2 (East-West). Depending on the exact location of your accommodations, there are several exits you may be able to take. Please refer to your personal navigation system or online navigation services, such as Google Maps, for precise directions.

Please note that parking in Graz, specifically in the center of town, is limited and/or can be pricey. We recommend that you contact your accommodations regarding parking options. For information about the Graz parking zone rules, please visit the city's Information Website (in German, but a Google live translation is available from the drop down menu in the top right-hand corner) or the relevant Graz Tourism webpage.
